Angela shared her story of visiting Afghanistan in June
of 2009. She gave statistics on women there: every 30 minutes a woman
dies in childbirth, 1 in 8 die giving birth, 1 in 4 children do not live
to age 5, many brides are under age 16, 87% of women say they experience
domestic violence, there are more female suicides than male, 1,000,000
widows have turned to prostitution for survival, and a woman's lifespan
is approximately 45 years.
Angela visited the area near Herat, close to the boarder of Iran. This
area is relatively free from combat issues as the fighting is more
prevalent in the capital of Kabul.
They are working in one country hospital that serves
around 800,000 people in the region. They are training local women in
midwifery. Women are not allowed to be treated by a male physician and
there are no female doctors, so OB/Gyn training and education is
essential.
The Women of Vision Afghanistan Project is a three-year project
requiring $156,000. The following is from the World Vision website
describing this project: The Midwife Training
and Support Program is operational in several different areas of western
Afghanistan. Project leaders hope to reduce the high maternal, infant,
and child mortality rates by instructing women in providing adequate
medical care for pregnant mothers and newborns. World Vision plans to
train 24 midwives in the rural districts of the Ghor Province at the
Chaghcharan Provincial Hospital. Leaders already have trained 80
midwives at the Institute of Health Sciences facility in the city of
Herat. Overall goals of the project are to increase the capacity of
local health workers and to provide critical care for mothers and
newborns.

Angela recommended this book: "Half the Sky; Turning Oppression into
Opportunity for Women Worldwide" by Nickolas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunna.
This book is a passionate call to arms against our era’s most pervasive
human rights violation: the oppression of women and girls in the
developing world.
